Data Classification

Data Classification helps organizations understand which types of data an application may process. This supports compliance needs such as ISO 27001, GDPR, and general internal governance.

Each application can carry one or more data labels — for example, Financial Data, HR Data, or Analytics Data.

These classifications help teams:

  • Identify applications handling sensitive information
  • Run risk assessments
  • Plan governance, compliance, and security reviews
  • Filter applications and manage them efficiently in Discovery

How Data Classification Works

AppNavi automatically helps classify applications using two layers:

Catalog-Level Classification (Automatic)

Before an app appears in Discovery, AppNavi checks it against a predefined SaaS Catalog. If a match is found and the catalog includes data classifications, those labels are pre-filled automatically when the app is discovered.

  • This ensures consistency
  • Helps organizations start with correct default values
  • Avoids manual work for every newly discovered app

Discovered App-Level Classification (User-Controlled)

After the app appears in Discovery:

  • Users can manually change or adjust the Data Classification field
  • The field supports multi-select
  • Once a user edits this value, it becomes fully user-controlled
  • Future catalog updates will not overwrite user-made changes

This gives users complete flexibility while keeping initial values meaningful.
